BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: Participation and Improvement: 55% Midterm (two parts of 10%): 20% Final: 25% CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the course is to present a method and give examples and an experience of communicating as an authentic leader of change. Emphasis is on oral expression that conveys both competence and trustworthiness and that moves others to committed action. Students work with three principles: discover what matters, find a "voice" and connect with others. We explore the craft of oral communication in hard evidence, story, metaphor and personal experience. Topics are the students' own choice, based on their life experiences and deep interest. We develop messages around these topics that reflect both clarity and depth, both objective purpose and subjective meaning. Each topic is explored for its metaphorical or direct implication in the world of business. The course does provide a structure that forces students to ask questions of themselves and to develop a complete effective communication. We then explore and practice dialogue with a model for eliciting an authentic response from others. Those who take the class should be willing to do critical thinking around a particular topic, write for clarity (not for grade!), practice in front of others, listen and adapt to feedback, and give constructive criticism of peers. Throughout the course, each person will work to refine one message, stressing the elements that work to provide conviction in yourself and others.
