Cliff Higgerson has more than 35 years of experience in research, consulting, planning and venture investing. Combining the market insight of an analyst with a keen ability to identify blockbuster technologies early in their development, Cliff has backed some of the most successful companies in the communications industry. He focuses his investments on telecommunications with an emphasis on carrier systems and equipment.

Recent investments and board seats include Astute Networks, Hatteras Networks, Kotura, Lambda OpticalSystems, Ygnition, and Xtera Communications. Prior to investments include such industry leaders as Advanced Fibre Communications (Nasdaq: AFCI); America Online; Ciena (Nasdaqa; CIEN); Digital Island (acquired by Cable & Wireless); Digital Microwave, now Stralex Networks (Nasdaq: STXN); Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB); MCI (Nasdaq: MCIP); Octel (NYSE: OTL); and Tut Systems (Nasdaq: TUTS).

Cliff was a Founding Partner of ComVentures and a General Partner with Vanguard Venture Partners. He has also served as a Managing Partner and Director of Research for Hambrecht & Quist, and as a Special Limited Partner and Director of the Communications Group for L.F. Cliff holds an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, and a BS from the University of Illinois .

KEYNOTE: Ta-lin Hsu, Chairman and Founder, H&Q, Asia Pacific

Ta-lin Hsu is the founder and chairman of H&Q Asia Pacific. Since its inception, H&Q Asia Pacific has managed 19 funds of over US$2.1 billion in committed capital. Prior to founding H&Q Asia Pacific in 1986, Dr. Hsu worked at IBM for 12 years, reaching the position of senior manager in the research division -- with corporate responsibility for advanced research and development of mass storage systems and technology -- before joining Hambrecht & Quist as a general partner in 1985. Dr. Hsu received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley following a M.S. in electrophysics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and a B.S. in physics from National Taiwan University. Dr. Hsu was a founding member of the prestigious Technology Review Board of Taiwan, which was instrumental in the establishment of the country’s technology industry. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., Starbucks Beijing, Ritek Corp., are some of the boards of public and private companies Dr. Hsu currently serves. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Asia Foundation and Pacific Pension Institute. Dr. Hsu is a member of the Advisory Board of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley and is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

KEYNOTE: Thomas Kalil, Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Science and Technology, UC Berkeley

Thomas Kalil is currently the Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Science and Technology at UC Berkeley. He is developing new research initiatives at the intersection of information technology, nanotechnology, microsystems, and biology. He is also developing a broad range of partnerships between 2 of the California Institutes of Science and Innovation and potential stakeholders in industry, government, foundations, and non-profits. Previously, Thomas Kalil served as the Deputy Assistant to President Clinton for Technology and Economic Policy, and the Deputy Director of the White House National Economic Council. Prior to joining the White House, Tom was a trade specialist at the Washington offices of Dewey Ballantine, where he represented the Semiconductor Industry Association on U.S.-Japan trade issues and technology policy.  Tom received a B.A. in political science and international economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and completed graduate work at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Mr. Duan is a ministry level leader in China, an influential policy expert in science & technology, law, technology investment, intellectual property. He currently serves as:

  • Vice President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI)
  • Chinese Group President of China’s Law Association on Science and Technology
  • Senior Advisor to Shanghai Municipal Superior Court
  • Chief of the Expert Advisory Team to the revision of China’s Science and Technology Advancement Law.

Mr. Duan is the former China WTO/Intellectual Property Negotiator. He has played very important role in China’s legislation. He has led the drafting team of China’s Technology Contract Law, and the Science and Technology Advancement Law. In addition, he was actively involved in the legislation of other important laws including the General Civil Law, Contract Law, Patent Law, Copyright Law, and Promotion of Science and Technology Transfer Law.

Gary Cleary, President and CTO, Corium International, Inc.

Gary W. Cleary, Ph.D., is a co-founder, President, and Chief Technology Officer of Corium International- a biotech company that develops and manufactures biopharma products for delivery through the skin & mucosa.  He  holds 25 issued US patents with several pending related to transdermal, mucosal, polymer science and other drug delivery technologies. Dr. Cleary earned a Pharm.D. from UCSF, an MBA in health sciences from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. in pharmaceutics from Rutgers University. Corium has a research collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Alex Freedland, Chairman and CEO, Mirantis, Inc.

Alex started his business career by creating ProSys – a successful consulting company providing specialized software services to companies like IBM, ADP, and Netscape.

In 1997, Alex co-founded RSI Group, Inc., - one of the world’s principal providers of Receivables Management Software and Services where Alex assumed the responsibility of the EVP and CTO in charge of Product Development , System Integration, and Technical Services. In 1999 RSI Group was acquired by LondonBridge Software Holdings, a leading UK Technology firm, at which time Alex became the CTO for the US LondonBridge division.

Alex’s earlier experience includes a range of technical and management positions with Tektronix, IBM, Edify, and KLA Tencor. He holds a Masters degree in Computer Engineering from Santa Clara University in California.

Alex is known and well respected in the Silicon Valley business community as a visionary leader and a shrewd entrepreneur. He sits on the boards of several hi-tech companies, and is active in the investor community.

Alex Osadzinski, Venture Partner, Trinity Ventures

Alex has over 20 years' experience in computer systems and software sales, marketing, engineering and general management. He began his career in the UK at two software startups, was AT&T's European Sales Manager for its UNIX products and then started and managed Sun's marketing function in Europe. He held a number of management positions at Sun in the US, including VP Markets & Product Strategy.

After general management positions at Grass Valley Group (Tektronix) he was VP Sales & Marketing at Be. More recently, he was VP Marketing at Vitria Technology and CEO of Katmango.

Leon Polott, Founder and President, 5iTech LLC

Prior to forming 5iTech, Mr. Polott represented U.S. and foreign clients in multi-million dollar negotiations and advised them with respect to commercialization of novel technology, international technology transfer, technology licensing and development, international business ventures and market penetration strategies. He has worked with some of the largest US companies as well as with the leading institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 2005, Leon was appointed to the U.S. – Russia Innovation Council on High Technologies by the U.S. Department of Commerce. He serves on the Advisory Board of World Trade Center Cleveland and on the Northern Ohio District Export Council. He served several terms as Chair of the International Section of the Cleveland Bar Association

Mr. Polott holds a BA degree (with honors in government) from Oberlin College and a Juris Doctorate from The University of Texas School of Law. He has native fluency in Russian.

V. Ravichandar, CEO, Feedback Business Consulting Services Ltd.

V. Ravichandar is CEO, Feedback Business Consulting Services, a leading B2B consulting firm in Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley. Feedback has undertaken over 1400 studies, particularly in assessing market opportunities for clients, such as GE, Microsoft, ABB, Siemens, Infosys, Philips, 3M, Saint Gobain, Shell, Intel, IBM, HP, Bosch, Alcan, Dow Corning and others, including consulting assignments regarding setting up of R&D centers in India. Feedback has enabled over US$ 5 bn investment decisions by providing key insights for foreign firms about Indian market opportunities in a very wide range of sectors.

Mr. Ravichandar has also been on the board of the Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF), a public-private partnership, where he has contributed on initiatives regarding urban infrastructure, governance issues, fiscal improvements and on enhancing the business environment. Mr. Ravichandar has a Mechanical Engineering degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Glenn Rice, CEO and President, Bridge Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Glenn Rice is founder and CEO and President of Bridge Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Bridge is the leading preclinical contract research organization (CRO) for drug development in China. Previously (2002-2004), Glenn Rice headed life sciences at SRI International, was Board Director and Vice President of Research at ILEX Oncology, and CEO of Convergence Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He has founded EmergingMed, an online clinical trial prequalification and matching database and is a founder of the Critical Path Institute, an Institute focused on drug development and regulatory innovation he helped found with the FDA, the University of Arizona and SRI International. Glenn Rice also held positions of Vice President of Research at Cytokine Networks (1998-1999), Director at Cell Therapeutics Inc. (CTI) from 1993-1998 and headed a discovery laboratory at Genentech (1987-1993). He is currently an inventor on over 20 patents or patent applications and has authored over 75 manuscripts and book chapters.

Lee Ting, Managing Director, Private Capital/Venture, WR Hambrecht + Co

Lee Ting is a Managing Director of WR Hambrecht+Co with a focus on private equity in the US and Asia. Prior to joining WR Hambrecht+Co in 2000 he had more than thirty years of operations experience at Hewlett-Packard in executive positions both in the US and Asia. His last position there was Corporate Vice President and Managing Director of Worldwide Geographic Operations. He also served as a Senior Vice President at Hambrecht & Quist where he played a key role in the creation of the first H&Q VC funds in Asia in the late 80’s. Currently, Lee is an independent board member of Lenovo Group, the third largest global PC company, and Microelectronics Technology, a leading provider of wireless communications products. He is also an active advisor to other VC funds and companies. Lee is a graduate of Oregon State Univesity with a BSEE.

Patricia Turney, Director of R&D Strategic Operations, Amgen, Inc.

Patricia Turney joined Amgen Inc. in 1996 as a Supervisor in Operations and has grown her role to enable Amgen's global expansion & development. In 1998, she managed Capital Construction Funding and, in 2000, was selected by the VP of Operations to be his Chief of Staff for two years. Patricia then created the Corporate Engineering group supporting Amgen’s rapid site expansion. In conjunction with industry peers & the FDA she developed a Baseline Guide for Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Facilities used worldwide.  Now a Director in R&D Strategic Operations, Patricia is responsible for pipeline planning and strategy, international expansion, and business process improvements.  Prior to Amgen, Patricia owned and operated an aircraft charter company.  She also served in the U.S. military as a Naval Aviator for 6 years.  Patricia received a B.S. in Mathematics, minor in Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Masters in Business Administration from UCLA.

M. Vidyasagar, Executive Vice President, Tata Consultancy Services, Ltd.

Dr. M. Vidyasagar is Executive Vice President in charge of Advanced Technology at Tata Consultancy Services Limited, India’s largest software and consultancy firm.

He holds a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. He is the author of 10 books and over 130 technical papers. He has won several awards in recognition of his research, including the “Distinguished Service Citation” from his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin. He was awarded the Fellowship of IEEE at 35, one of the youngest to receive this honor. In November 2004, IEEE Spectrum named him one of “Forty Tech Gurus” along with luminaries such as Craig Barrett and Vinton Cerf.

Kewei Yang, Chairman and CEO, Analogix Semiconductor, Inc.

Kewei Yang's career has been spent focusing on high-speed analog and mixed-signal design. Prior to co-founding Analogix, he was vice-president of engineering at Mindspeed, a division of Conexant, where he was responsible for the company's development of high-speed transceivers and switch fabric ICs. He came to Conexant via its acquisition of HotRail, where he served as chief scientist. Kewei Yang also served as a lead designer at Rendition, a graphics chip company, and at HP in the Computer Technology Lab. He has a BSEE from Tsinghua University and an MSEE and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins.

Alexandra Johnson, Managing Director, Landbridge Capital, LLC

Alexandra Johnson is managing director of Landbridge Capital LLC, a venture capital firm that targets US-based companies commercializing Russian technology. Prior to forming Landbridge Capital, she was CEO of Libritas, Inc., a venture-backed provider of information technology products. Alexandra runs the Global Technology Symposium, held annually at Stanford. She holds an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in philology from St. Petersburg State University in Russia.

Stephen Maurer, Director, Goldman School Project on Information Technology and Homeland Security

Stephen Maurer is Adjunct Associate Professor at UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy and Director of the School's Information Technology & Homeland Security Project.  Trained as an attorney, he practiced intellectual property law with leading firms from 1982 to 2000.  Maurer's research focuses on how policymakers can use modern innovation economics to accelerate pharmaceutical discovery in cases where conventional patents are ineffective.  Examples include drugs for malaria and vaccines against potential bioweapons.  Maurer is also a founding member of "The Tropical Disease Initiative," an open-source computational drug discovery program for malaria.  Maurer has published extensively on academic-industry transactions, scientific data, database economics, and patent reform for a variety of journals including Nature, Science, The WHO Bulletin, Human Mutation, and Economica.

AnnaLee Saxenian, Dean and Professor, School of Information, UC Berkeley.

AnnaLee Saxenian is Dean and Professor in the U.C. Berkeley School of Information and Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning. She is an internationally recognized expert on the social and institutional foundations of economic development, and she has written extensively on Silicon Valley and other technology regions around the world.

Her most recent book The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in a Global Economy (Harvard University Press, 2006) explores how immigrant engineers and scientists have transferred the institutions of technology entrepreneurship to emerging regions in China, India, Taiwan, and Israel. Prior publications include Regional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128 (Harvard, 1994), Silicon Valley’s New Immigrant Entrepreneurs (Public Policy Institute of California, 1999), and Local and Global Networks of Immigrant Professionals in Silicon Valley (PPIC, 2002.) Saxenian holds a Doctorate in Political Science from MIT, a Master's in Regional Planning from the University of California at Berkeley, and a BA in Economics from Williams College.

DIRECTIONS AND TRANSPORTATION

The conference will take place in Andersen Auditorium, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley. Please view the floorplan to find where the Auditorium is located in the building.

Directions, interactive maps and public parking information is available at the Visiting Haas page. We reserved 60 spots at the Lower Hearst Parking Structure between Euclid and Scenic Avenue off the north side of campus. An attendant will sell daily passes for $15 each on a first come, first served basis. Please arrive by 8:00 am to allow time to get over to Haas.
