Ambassador Janet Sanderson discussed successes and failures, by American businesses,
in their attempts to enter overseas markets, particularly the
middle east. Ambassador Sanderson served as U.S. Ambassador to
the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria (2000-2003). In addition
to her service in North Africa, Ambassador Sanderson has had extensive
experience in the Middle East. An economist by education and training,
her assignments have included a tour as the Economic Minister-Counselor
at the US Embassy in Cairo (1993-1997), where she oversaw the
implementation of the US/Egyptian Partnership for Economic Growth
and Development. She also worked as Economic Counselor at the
US Embassy in Amman, Jordan, during the 1990-1991 Gulf War, monitoring
the impact of that crisis on Jordan's economy and as Petroleum
Attache in Kuwait (1982-1985) during the Iran/Iraq "Tanker
War." Ambassador Sanderson served in the US Embassy in Tel
Aviv in 1980-1982, functioning as a one-person USAID mission with
responsibility for US Government aid programs in Gaza and Israel.
The Ambassador also served as Deputy Chief of Mission the Embassy's
top manager and second in command to the Ambassador - in Amman,
Jordan in 1997-2000.
