International Business Fellowships 2007
The Clausen Center commends the following Haas Students for their commitment to international business and policy as shown in their past, present and future endeavors.
Brittany Hinchcliff - BA '08 studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain at the Escola Superior de Comerç Internacional. The Clausen International Business Fellowship has allowed her to understand more fully the international business environment in Spain and the rest of the European Union by taking courses in Spanish economy, international marketing, advertising, and marketing cultural heritage. She has also taken a practical intensive Spanish course to improve her business level of Spanish speaking, writing, and comprehension. The program exposes students to the realities in the Spanish and European business worlds through expert faculty, interactive projects, and field trips.
In the future, Britt hopes to work internationally in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and intends on using this knowledge towards furthering her career. By having a greater understanding and perspective of international business, Britt can better understand how to work effectively on an international scale.
Jessica Huang - BA '08 is currently working towards her BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering, B.S. in Business Administration, and B.S. in Environmental Economics and Policy. The 2007 Clausen International Business Fellowship gave her the opportunity to pursue independent research on the potential of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) as a sustainable alternative to fuel-based lighting in urban and rural households of Uganda. Jessica spent five weeks in and around the city of Kampala interviewing heads of households and their families, lighting retail shop owners, street vendors, sellers and distributers at trading centers, and government officials, including the State House Private Secretary of Science and Technology to President Museveni.
In Jessica's own words, "My experiences abroad have opened my eyes to the very different and difficult conditions faced by people in East Africa. This fellowship has only fueled my desire for a career in appropriate technology design for the developing world, and I hope to continue my training by taking a graduate-level Energy and Resources design class with Dr. Ashok Gadgil next spring."
Husain Misherghi - MBA '08 is currently working towards his B.S. in Business Administration and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent the summer of 2007 at General Electric’s Middle East and Africa headquarters in Dubai, UAE as a Financial Management Program Summer Intern. The summer internship program was meant to prepare students for a two year rotational program in which financial analysts spend six months in four countries throughout Europe and the Middle East. As a summer intern, he worked closely with finance managers and executives in General Electric’s Energy and Corporate divisions.
To take full advantage of his trip to the Middle East, Husain shared research on the developmental effects of war and military occupation on children at local cafes. This semester Husain is teaching a DeCal course on the same subject through the psychology department. Upon graduation, Husain will begin working as an Associate Financial Analyst for Google, Inc.
