Our Mission

Institute for Business & Social Impact

Mission & Goals

The institute's mission is to inspire and empower members of the Berkeley Haas community to develop innovative solutions to urgent social and environmental challenges.

The institute builds on the Haas School's distinguished history of training path-breaking leaders who question the status quo and think beyond themselves.

The institute is based on the recognition that fostering a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable society requires leadership across all sectors -- for-profit businesses, non-profit organizations, social enterprises, and the public sector.

To that end, the institute brings together six Haas School centers and programs to train leaders to achieve social impact.

As Berkeley Haas alumni have shown, there are many pathways to fulfilling careers with social impact. The institute aims to help students design their own pathways, often from the ground up, by offering a rich choice of courses, front-line work projects, student organizations, and advanced research.

Our Goals

  • To build a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable society.
  • To train leaders who can work across traditional boundaries between nonprofit organizations, for-profit enterprise and the public sector to achieve social impact.
  • To promote social entrepreneurs to create new solutions to social and environmental challenges.

Defining Leadership Principles

The institute promotes the distinctive culture of Berkeley Haas in order to achieve our mission, closely aligning our work with the school’s four leadership principles.

  • Question the Status Quo
  • Confidence Without Attitude
  • Student Always
  • Beyond Yourself
