MBA/MA Program in International and Area Studies

The opportunity to earn two degrees concurrently lets you make the most of your time at Haas and UC Berkeley and provides a wider range of flexibility and proficiency in pursuing varied career options in the U.S. and abroad.

  JD/MBA Program

Students complete this four-year program with a solid foundation in both law and management, having earned a Berkeley MBA and a JD from either UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law or UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. Typically, the first year is spent in law school, the second in business school. During the third and fourth years, you take electives in both schools.

Boalt/Haas students: 118 units required (43 in business; 75 in law). You must register and pay fees for a minimum of eight semesters at UC Berkeley. You may take courses in either program during your third and fourth years.

Hastings/Haas students: 117 units required (43 in business; 74 in law). In order to avoid paying fees at both universities for a single semester, you are expected to spend five semesters at Hastings and three at Haas. This requires that you take a higher than normal unit load during your three Haas semesters; however, you still will be subject to the normal pre-enrollment unit limit during the bidding process.

  MBA/MPH Program in Health Management

Working together, the Haas School and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health train leaders to manage complex healthcare organizations. You will complete the 2.5-year program with an MBA and a Masters of Public Health degree. You will take courses in both schools and will complete a three-month internship in a healthcare organization. Graduates are prepared for leadership in both the business and delivery sides of health services and technology industries, including managed care and insurance, consulting, biotechnology, e-health, medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

You will complete 80 units of coursework, at least 45 from Haas and 24 from the School of Public Health. The remaining 11 units may be taken from any graduate department on campus. You must register for a minimum of five semesters at Berkeley. For more information go to: http://socrates.berkeley.edu:7133/.

MBA/MA Program in International and Area Studies

The three-year MBA/MA-IAS program broadens your knowledge of different regions or countries through courses with an international orientation, language classes and area study courses from departments and schools across UC Berkeley. You may focus on a topic (e.g., international trade and debt, investment strategies, global communications, environmental issues, or urban and regional development) or on an area (e.g., China, Japan, Russia, Germany, Brazil, the Middle East, Africa or Southeast Asia).

Students must apply during their first year in the MBA program. If accepted, you must complete all MBA requirements (51 units of core and elective courses) and:
• Register for a minimum of six semesters at Berkeley.
• Complete 24 units of international and area studies, 12 of them at the graduate level. (None in business administration.)
• Demonstrate proficiency in a modern language related to your area of interest. (None of the units needed to develop this proficiency count toward the 24 required units. You may take these courses at Berkeley if you are not already proficient.)
• Pass a written or oral comprehensive exam based on your program of study.

Note: if you already are proficient in a foreign language, you may earn an MA-IAS degree in one year; for others, it may take as long as two years in addition to the normal two-year Haas program. For more information, please go to: http://ias.berkeley.edu/.
