  Housing for Single Students

  • Manville Apartments
These 132 modern, unfurnished, single-occupancy studios are reserved for business, law, and other graduate students. Located at the corner of Channing Way and Shattuck Avenue near downtown Berkeley, these small units pack a large amount of conveniences: mini-kitchenettes and a built-in desk in each unit, study rooms, and a private outdoor courtyard for the residents. Please check with the Apartment Assignments Office for the rates. Apply as soon as possible to get on the wait list.

• Ida Louise Jackson House Shared Apartments
These recently-built apartments feature furnished, single-occupancy bedrooms with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and living/dining area. Apartments range in size from two to six bedrooms. Situated a block from campus on the southside, the Jackson House Apartments house mostly graduate students. Please contact the Residence Hall Assignments Office to inquire about rent ranges and how wait list priority will be assigned.

  Residence Halls

New graduate students are eligible for double or triple rooms only in the University Residence Halls. Although you may apply to any of the five residential complexes, Spens-Black Hall in the Unit 3 complex has been set aside for transfer, upper division, and graduate students. The deadline is usually June 1 to get on the wait list. A meal plan is included. Check with the Residence Hall Assignments Office for details.

Housing for Married Students and Students
with Children

  • University Village in Albany and Smyth Fernwald in Berkeley
These are two apartment complexes that have been set aside for married students and students with custody of minor children. University Village is a 56-acre complex with close to 1,000 apartments. Smyth Fernwald houses 74 families near the southeast side of campus. Please apply early through the Apartments Assignment Office (see above) for this popular housing, as rents in family student housing are below market rate and there are usually long wait lists.

Please be advised that due to construction, spaces for new residents in family housing will be very limited starting in 2004. Applicants are encouraged to consult with a Cal Rentals counselor to discuss alternatives.
