  Where do Haas Students Live?

Please refer to the Haas Student Survey to learn more about where Haas students live.

  The Cell Phone Advantage

Students who have access to cell phones with a local (510) area code tend to secure housing quickly. Having a phone with you at all times minimizes the risk of missing an opportunity to set up an appointment in a competitive rental market. Cal Rentals can provide information on how to rent such a phone fairly inexpensively.

  Housing During Your Search

If you do not have a place to stay during your housing search over the summer, you may be able to rent a room in a University residence hall on a per night basis. For information on availability of summer visitor housing, rates, dates, and payment options, please check http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/conference/summervis/.

If you prefer not to stay in a dormitory, there are many inexpensive hotels and motels in the Berkeley area, particularly on University Avenue, the main artery leading to the campus from the freeway (Interstate 80). For a detailed list of local hotels and motels and their addresses and telephone numbers, see the Hotel and Motel List at the end of this section or you may visit the Cal Rental website at http://calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu/flyers/Hotels_Motels.asp.

  Transportation from the Airports

If you intend to arrive in the San Francisco Bay Area by air, consider flying into Oakland rather than San Francisco. Oakland International Airport is smaller and easier to manage than San Francisco International. It also is closer to Berkeley. Both airports have information desks that can answer your questions about transportation. Here are some options that you might consider:

Oakland Airport To Berkeley
The simplest but most expensive way to travel from the Oakland Airport to Berkeley is by taxi, which will cost approximately $50. Mass transit offers a less expensive mode, such as the AirBART shuttle bus to the Coliseum BART (subway/train) station, followed by a "Richmond" train to the Berkeley BART station, which costs under $4 for the complete trip. For BART schedules and information, see www.bart.gov.

San Francisco Airport To Berkeley
If you arrive at San Francisco International Airport (known as SFO), the least expensive means of transportation to Berkeley is again mass transit. Take the "Dublin/Pleasanton" BART train from the San Francisco Airport station to the Balboa Park station. At the Balboa Park station, switch to the "Richmond" train. Once on the "Richmond" train, exit at the Downtown Berkeley station. The entire trip costs just a little under $6.00.

Airport Shuttles
If you have a lot of luggage, you might prefer to take a door-to-door shuttle, which will pick you up at the airport and drop you off wherever you wish in Berkeley. Generally, you need to call to make a reservation in advance and then call them again upon your arrival at the airport.

For Detailed Transportation Information
For more information on the above transportation options, including company names, telephone numbers, and pricing, see the transportation chart at the end of this section. You also can get detailed information on BART and other transportation by visiting UC Berkeley's Parking and Transportation website at http://pt.berkeley.edu or the Bay Area Transit Information web site at http://511.org/.
