Rodrigo Rato, MBA 74, is serving a five-year term as managing director and chairman of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), an organization of 184 countries that fosters global monetary cooperation and sustainable growth, and works to reduce poverty.

Rato entered politics in his native Spain after receiving his Berkeley MBA in 1974. He became a member of Parliament in 1982 and was named Spain’s finance minister in 1996, managing economic policy with long-term objectives of low and stable inflation and low public deficit. His successes positioned Spain to meet the criteria for membership in the EU’s Economic and Monetary Union in 1998. Most recently, he was Spain‘s minister of the economy and vice president for economic affairs.

Rato holds a law degree and a Ph.D. in economics, both from the Universidad Complutense. In 2000, he gave the commencement address at the Haas School graduation.
