How to Apply
The doctoral program is a four-year, full-time program. Part-time, evening and on-line studies are not offered. Applications are accepted only for the fall semester of each academic year. Prospective students may request application materials one year in advance, in August of the year prior to the fall term for which admission is sought.
Application Forms
Formal application is made by submitting the "Application for Admission and Fellowships" from the Berkeley Graduate Division. This application is available on-line early in September of each year at http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/admissions/
grad_app.shtml.
Applicants are also required to submit official transcripts showing all college-level work undertaken at the academic institutions attended. These forms, along with all other documentation required, must be mailed directly to the Ph.D. Program address. If materials are mailed to the Graduate Division by mistake, processing of applications by the Ph.D. Program Committee will be delayed.
The selection of applicants is based on evidence of a high level of scholarly ability, involving both quantitative and qualitative skills; the motivation to complete a strenuous academic program; and career objectives consistent with the Ph.D. degree. The committee reviews undergraduate and graduate work already completed; scores of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within five years of the date of application; the applicant's statement of purpose; and three letters of recommendation, usually from academics familiar with the applicant's scholastic and research capabilities.
International applicants from countries in which the official language is not English must also submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). We will only accept TOEFL tests administered by the Educational Testing Service and sent to us directly by the TOEFL office. Your most recent score must be at least 570 for the paper-and-pencil test, at least 230 for the computer-based test or 68 on the Internet-based Testing (iBT). International applicants should review the UC Berkeley Graduate Division requirements for international students at: http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/admissions/
admis_require.shtml#4_2P.
The Ph.D. Program does not set minimum scores on the GMAT and GRE examinations or employ a minimum grade-point-average cutoff. However, among those applicants recommended for admission in recent years, the median GMAT score was 730. The median GRE scores were verbal 660 and quantitative 800. The median grade point average was 3.8 for undergraduate and 4.0 for graduate work (on a 4.0 scale).
Applicants should pay particular attention to the question of career objectives in their statement of purpose. Carefully written and clearly enunciated goals should demonstrate how study at the Haas School will influence reaching those objectives. All required application materials, including official score reports on performance examinations, must be received on time to ensure review of the application by the Ph.D. Program Committee.
Ph.D. Program staff members may be reached by phone at 510-642-1409, by fax at 510-643-4255, or by e-mail at phdadms@haas.berkeley.edu.
