Application submission for Fall 2008 is now closed. Information and application instructions for Fall 2009 admissions will be posted in July, 2008

Admissions for Fall 2008 will begin September 10, 2007. Deadline for applications is December 15, 2007.

CURRENT OR FORMER UC BERKELEY GRADUATE STUDENTS:

Current or former graduate students of UC Berkeley do not complete the on-line UC Berkeley Graduate Application. Download and follow the Admissions Procedures for Current or Former Graduate Students of UC Berkeley. (Available in pdf format; Acrobat Reader required).

Call 510-642-1409 or email us at phdadms@haas.berkeley.edu We will have your previous application on file, but will need to know what parts of your prior application you want to move forward to your current application.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Apply online using the UC Berkeley Graduate Application forms (available September 10, 2007): Graduate Application. If you are unable to apply on-line please write to phdadms@haas.berkeley.edu

Application fee: $60 for US citizens, $80 for all other applicants. The application fee may be paid by credit card if applying on-line, or by US check or money order payable to UC Regents.

The best way to submit your application materials is in one packet sent to the Ph.D. office. Please keep in mind that if you are mailing your letters of recommendation and official transcripts they must be in sealed envelopes with a signature or official seal across the back flap.

Below is a list and information about application materials.

Do not print the on-line forms and mail them to the Ph.D. Program. We will print a copy of your on-line application once it has been submitted. Your on-line application is official only if you have received the “Submitted” confirmation email message from the Graduate Division.   • Graduate Division Application
    This consists of:

    1. Proposed Degree Program
    Select Business Administration (PhD). Once you save this, you will be able to select your concentration.

  • Departmental Application
    This consists of:

    1. Exam Scores
    Without exception, all applicants to the Haas Ph.D. Program must submit official scores of either the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT – code 4925 or new code N2V-PT-06 effective 1-3-06) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE – code 4833). Either test must be taken no earlier than October 2002. Arrange to have official score reports sent directly to the Ph.D. program. Photocopies and/or examinee copies of score reports are not acceptable.

    Evidence of English Language Proficiency International applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to take an English proficiency test. You may take the TOEFL, iBT TOEFL (also called Next Generation TOEFL) or the IELTS. Refer to the UC Berkeley Graduate Application for guidelines regarding the submission of these tests, and if required, how to do so. The test must have been taken within one year of application, no earlier than June 2006. Our TOEFL institution code is 4833. Your most recent TOEFL score must be at least 570 for the paper and pencil test, at least 230 for the computer based test, or a minimum aggregate score of 68 if you take the iBT or Next Generation test. If you choose to take the IELTS test your most recent band score must be at least a 7 on a 9-point scale.

    Waiver of TOEFL or IELTS If you have completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or better at a recognized US university, or have received a degree from a recognized English speaking institution in your country, you do not need to take a standardized test. Instead, you must submit an official transcript from the US school. The following courses will not fulfill this requirement: 1) courses in English as a Second Language 2) courses conducted in a language other than English, 3) courses that will be completed after you apply, and 4) courses in a non-academic nature.

    2. GPA
    Please calculate your GPA score. International students, other than those who received degrees from US-based universities, are exempt from this. Transcripts: Submit one complete set of sealed official transcripts of all college-level work you have undertaken. Submit the transcripts with your application materials or arrange to have the academic institutions you attended send the transcripts directly to the Ph.D. office at the address above

    3. Personal Statements
    In writing this, address all points suggested in the application instructions and comment on the following:

    1. The aspects of the Ph.D. program in Business Administration at Berkeley that especially encouraged you to apply.
    2. Any educational or employment experience that you believe has particularly aided you in preparing to enter our program.
    3. Indicate research you have pursued either in academic programs or at a place of employment
    4. Write briefly on which faculty you would like to work with and why.

    5. Recommendations
    Submit three letters of recommendation evaluating your academic performance and promise. Applicants can request their recommenders to submit letters on-line.

    However, you can choose to use the paper version of Form G. If you choose to waive access to your letters of recommendation, complete the waiver section of Form G and include it with your request to your recommender.

    Submit your letters of recommendation, sealed and signed across the back by the recommender, with your other support materials, or ask your recommender to mail the letter directly to our office (address above).

    Please note: there is an address at the top of the form where you fill in the blank with the department to which you are applying. In the blank space write: Ph.D. – Business Administration.

    6. Academic Interests
    You do not need to fill out the faculty who you’ve contacted. However, fill out the second part, listing the faculty whose research interests you.
