Haas Ph.D. Program

Admissions Process
Each year, the Ph.D. program at Haas School of Business receives approximately 400 applications for admission. A faculty committee reviews and ranks applications. The size of the entering class, limited by university regulations, is approximately 18 students per year. Qualified students from any discipline may be admitted. Previous graduate work or completion of an MBA is not required.

The doctoral program is a four-year program. Part-time, on-line, and evening studies are not offered. Applications are accepted only for the fall semester of each academic year. Admissions information can be found at http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Phd/apply_2.html. The pages are updated each year in July, with information on current deadlines and processes.

The selection of applicants is based on evidence of a high level of scholarly ability, involving both quantitative and qualitative skills; the motivation to complete a strenuous academic program; and career objectives consistent with the Ph.D. degree. A faculty committee reviews undergraduate and graduate work already complete, scores of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within five years of the date of application, the applicant's statement of purpose, and letters of reference, usually from academics familiar with the applicant's scholastic and research capabilities.

Applicants should pay particular attention to the question of career objectives in their statement of purpose. Carefully written and clearly enunciated goals should demonstrate how study at the Haas School will influence reaching those objectives.

The Ph.D. Program does not set minimum scores on the GMAT and GRE examinations or employ a minimum grade-point average cutoff. However, among those applicants recommended for admission in recent years, the median GMAT score was 730. The median GRE scores were 660 verbal and 800 quantitative. The median grade-point average was 3.8 for undergraduate and 4.0 for graduate work (on a 4.0 scale).
