International FAQs

Do I need to submit official evidence of English language proficiency?
All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency.

There are two standardized tests you may take: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or iBT TOEFL (Sometimes called Next Generation TOEFL), and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For purposes of admission, your most recent TOEFL score must be at least 570 for the paper-and-pencil test or at least 230 for the computer-based test, or at least 68 for the Internet-based test (iBT). In regards to the IELTS test your most recent overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.

TOEFL or iBT TOEFL and IELTS tests taken before June 2007 will not be accepted.
For more information regarding these tests please visit the UC Berkeley Graduate Division website.

Is it possible to waive having to take an English Proficiency test?
If you have completed at least one year of recent full-time academic course work with grades of B or better at an American university, or have received a degree from a recognized English-speaking institution, you may be exempted. For details, refer to the UC Berkeley Graduate Division requirements for international applicants at www.grad.berkeley.edu.

I'm from a foreign country. Will my degree be acceptable?
Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should have completed degree programs representing a minimum of 16 years of schooling with at least 12 years at the primary and secondary level.

Academic records should be issued in their original languages accompanied by English translations (usually prepared by your university or an official translator). In general, records or transcripts must be issued by the school and include the school's stamp or embossed seal and the signature of the authorizing official. In some countries, copies certified by notaries or governmental officials are acceptable, but copies certified by translators or U.S. notaries are not acceptable.

In English translations, degree names and grades should be transliterated, not converted into English words or the U.S. grades of A-F. If you must obtain a translation while in the United States, versions prepared by members of the American Translators Association are acceptable.

For more information please visit the UC Berkeley Graduate Division website.

Do you offer a concentration in international business?
No, we do not. However, there are faculty whose research has an international focus. We recommend that you look at faculty webpages and faculty bios on the Ph.D. fields of specialization webpages to identify faculty working in this area. Also, students may take pertinent coursework both at the Haas School and in other departments at the university.

Does the Haas Ph.D. Program offer financial aid?
To the extent of its resources, the Haas School of Business seeks to provide financial assistance to Ph.D. students in the form of stipends, fellowships, tuition and fee remission, and/or research and teaching assistantships for the first four years of study.

What financial aid is available for international applicants?
International applicants may qualify for financial assistance offered by the Haas School. However, foreign students should be advised that our resources are limited, and that only the most highly qualified applicants will be offered financial aid.
