EVIDENCE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
International applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to take an English proficiency test. You may take the TOEFL, iBT TOEFL (also called Next Generation TOEFL) or the IELTS.
Refer to the UC Berkeley Graduate Application for guidelines regarding the submission of these tests, and if required, how to do so.
The test must have been taken within one year of application, no earlier than June 2008. Our TOEFL institution code is 4833.
Your most recent TOEFL score must be at least 570 for the paper and pencil test, at least 230 for the computer based test, or a minimum aggregate score of 68 if you take the iBT or Next Generation test. The Haas School of Business PhD Program also reviews your scores in each of the four scored sections of the iBT (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing). To be competitive, your scores should be in the Intermediate-High or Fair-Good range. If you choose to take the IELTS test your most recent band score must be at least a 7 on a 9-point scale.
Waiver of TOEFL or IELTS If you have completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or better at a recognized US university, or have received a degree from a recognized English speaking institution in your country, you do not need to take a standardized test. Instead, you must submit an official transcript from the US school. The following courses will not fulfill this requirement:
1) courses in English as a Second Language
2) courses conducted in a language other than English
3) courses that will be completed after you apply, and
4) courses in a non-academic nature.
