Teaching: E-Commerce Courses, academic programs, and Seminars at the Haas School and at UC Berkeley

It is the dawn of the era of e-business, and technology is the catalyst bringing about this momentous change. Today, even the most traditional firms are beginning to adapt new information technologies to everything, overturning old business strategies, reshaping management methods, and reinventing relationships with customers because of the power of electronic commerce. No function of the firm - from accounting and supply chain management, to human relations and marketing - will escape this revolutionary upheaval driven by technology.

In recognition of the pervasive impact of new technology on business, the Haas School emphasizes the study of technology throughout its MBA curriculum and through a variety of special programs. The purpose of this emphasis is to provide Haas MBA students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to lead in this new environment. In the past, the study of technology was mainly of interest to students with technical backgrounds. This has changed rapidly, as managers of every kind of business face the technological revolution. As one Silicon Valley writer observed recently, even the high-tech world has shifted from being almost the exclusive domain of techies to a broader realm inhabited by growing legions of non technical Dot.com’ers. The door of opportunity has opened wide for individuals with non-technical backgrounds who have a thorough understanding of the role and nature of the new information technologies and how they can be applied successfully to business strategy and operations.

The Haas MBA Program’s approach to technology is designed to provide an overview of the subject for all students, and offer options for specialization and in-depth study. All first-year MBA students receive a broad introduction through a course on information technology management. Other core courses, such as strategy, also deal with the impact of technology in managing successful, competitive businesses. Students may select from a variety of electives exploring technology and its effects, including courses such as high-tech marketing, electronic commerce, strategic information management, managing innovation and change, managing new product development processes. Students may also choose from a rich assortment of elective courses in technology offered by other departments at Berkeley, including electronic commerce courses offered by the School of Information Management and Systems, and courses offered by the law school that explore the legal and policy impact of information technology on business. Many of these technology-oriented courses at Haas also feature real world projects, such as a business to business e-commerce course that sends teams of students to major firms as information technology consultants.
