Biobusiness Testimonials
Jesse Lemberger, MBA/MPH 07
What did you do before coming to Berkeley?
-
I worked at Schering-Plough, a large pharmaceutical company, developing the manufacturing processes for tablets and capsules. My job was very hands-on, working in pilot plants and manufacturing sites to ensure that all the regulatory and technical requirements were satisfied before FDA approval.
How did the MBA/MPH program help you prepare for a career in biobusiness?
-
My plan is to return to the pharmaceutical industry, ideally in a business development or financial role at a small pharmaceutical company. My experience before Haas was very focused on one area of drug development, but the healthcare-related courses that I have taken have greatly expanded my knowledge base which will be critical for my future success. I have also taken courses on the technical aspects of designing clinical trials as I feel that this is the backbone for developing drugs.

Did you know you wanted to work in biobusiness after graduation?
-
Having had experience in the biobusiness area, I was confident that I wanted to focus my energy in biobusiness after graduation. The great thing about the program is it allowed me to expand my knowledge of biobusiness and decide what area within the space I wanted to focus on first.
How did the MBA/MPH program help you prepare for a career in biobusiness?
-
The course work and events prepared me to look at the industry from multiple perspectives. The industry is rather complicated and the program prepares individuals to understand what the incentives are for the key stakeholders (the FDA, providers, large pharma/medtech companies, CMS, etc.). This type of training is invaluable.
-
Another useful aspect of the program are the events that allow current students to network with alumni. GPHM alumni are working in many different arenas across the biobusiness space and have and continue to open doors for each other.
How has the Haas healthcare program helped you in your current career?
-
The program broadened my understanding of the med/tech space. Because of the program I am able to better understand the relationships between the stakeholders in the space and assess their impact on the business.

How did the MBA/MPH help you prepare for a career in biobusiness?
-
The program provided excellent exposure to local leaders in the healthcare/biobusiness professional community. This exposure enhanced my networking success and enabled me to achieve my goals. Additionally, the classes I took taught me how to think strategically on the business side of healthcare. I use the knowledge and skills I gained from the program on a regular basis in my job.
