MBA Class of 2007, Full Time
A strong job market has greeted members of the Berkeley MBA class of 2007. While the pomp and circumstance of graduation were still fresh in everyone's mind, more than 95% of the class had already re-joined the workforce—securing positions within three months of graduation.
The breadth and scope of firms that hire Berkeley MBAs are wide and impressive, notes Abby Scott, executive director of MBA Career Services. “Our top hiring companies roster represents large MBA employers like Google, Bain, and Bank of America,” says Scott. “But you don't have to go very far down the list to see many smaller or non-traditional MBA employers, too.”
This year’s top employers also include Deloitte Consulting, Abbott Laboratories, Citi, McKinsey & Company, and Yahoo!. Berkeley MBAs from the class of 2007 will also be working for such firms as Apple, Chevron, Boston Consulting Goldman Sachs, Cisco, and Samsung.
Average and median starting salaries broke through the $100,000 mark for the first time, according to Scott. Average starting salaries are up again this year over last year. The mean base salary for Berkeley MBA graduates this year was $101,859, with a median of $100,000. A large percentage of students also receive substantial signing bonuses of $20,272 on average.
More and more companies continue to choose Haas as their recruiting partner because of its acclaimed general management program with top-ranked specialties, the independent and innovative thinking inherent to UC Berkeley graduates, and a collaborative culture that imbues students with confidence, not attitude. The Wall Street Journal recently ranked Haas as the #2 business school among corporate recruiters in the US, and the EIU ranked Haas #3 among schools that open the most opportunities for new careers to their students.
Finance is the top function among Berkeley MBA graduates. Those opportunities are reflected in the diversity of hiring companies and in the industry and functional choices of Berkeley MBA students. Nearly 36% of the graduates will work in finance, while 23% will work in marketing and product management, 18% in consulting, and 18 % in general management.
As for industries, 28% of the students are working in technology; 23% in financial services; and 18% in consulting. Other fields include real estate (7%), consumer packaged goods and retail (7%), biotech/pharmaceuticals/healthcare services, and medical devices (5%), education, government, and nonprofit (5%); and energy, environment, and natural resources (4%). Entrepreneurship continues to thrive at Haas with seventeen graduates starting their own companies in industries such as technology, marketing, biotechnology, and organic foods.
The Career Services staff works year-round to maintain, strengthen, and establish relationships with employers. Four industry-focused Account Managers partner with hundreds of firms, insuring their experience recruiting at Haas is a productive one. These individuals work on a strategic level with companies to help them select the right programs to target candidates for their firms. Lisa Feldman, Director of MBA Recruiting, points to the feedback Account Managers receive from recruiters as a key to developing interview preparation programs. “Students get better every year”, says Feldman, “thanks in part to this continuous feedback loop.”
As MBA Career Services further strengthens ties with the business community and works to provide the best possible employment tools, Haas School students will continue to be among the most highly sought-after business school graduates in the world.
