Class of 1998 Placement Summary

The Haas MBA continues to be a very valuable degree. The average salary accepted by members of the class of 1998 increased 1.9%, from $76,364 in 1997 to $77,797 in 1998.

Strategy/management consulting continues to be very popular; 28.2% of the graduates chose these positions, up from 25.6% in 1997. Other top functions remain steady: 13.9% to product management, 8.9% to corporate finance and 5.9% to general finance.

In terms of industry choice, students are equally drawn by consulting and high technology, with financial services coming in a strong third. Almost a third (31.7%) of the class took positions in consulting, while 30.4% went into a variety of companies in the high technology sector. Within technology this year, software was a very popular choice; 8.4% of students took jobs in the sector. Financial services came in at 20.3%, with particular interest in investment banking and commercial banking.

Northern California continues to hold most graduates, although the trend is down - 56.9% in 1998 compared to 67.3% in 1997. An addition 6.5% of the class chose positions in other west coast locations (e.g., Seattle, Los Angeles). More that one quarter of the students (25.3%) went to international locations, including 12.4% to Asia, 6.9% to Western Europe, and 4% to Central and South America.

More students received larger signing bonuses in 1998; employers were clearly focusing their compensation strategies in this area. Bonuses ranging from $3,000 to $35,000 were accepted by 68.8% of the class. The average bonus was $16,342, up 16.7% from last year. Bonus payment, previously industry dependent, is becoming the norm for MBA graduates. In consulting 84.6% of the graduates received signing bonuses averaging $20,304. In the financial services industry the average was $17,946, with 68.3% receiving bonuses. In the high technology sector 59% of graduates received bonuses averaging $11,010. In addition to signing bonuses, many students reported other kinds of bonuses (e.g., relocation, stock options, profit sharing, performance).

We expect the coming year to continue the strong trend for Haas graduates. The number and variety of opportunities continues to increase. It's an exciting time!

Class of 1999 Summer Internships Placement Summary

The summer of 1998 offered Haas students the opportunity to explore a wide range of industries and professions. More than 90% of the students reported summer internships, with salaries averaging $5,121 per month, a 2.9% increase over the 1997 average.

The list of most popular professions for summer differs slightly from that of the graduating class; marketing positions were especially popular. Product management (12.5%) and strategy/management consulting (12%) were the top choices, followed by 11.6% in general marketing and 7.4% in market research. Corporate/business development (7.4%) and strategic/business planning (6.5%) were also of particular interest to students. Within financial services, 6.5% of students took positions in corporate finance and 6% in general finance.

Students this year accepted positions in a broad range of industries. Consulting was selected by 16.7% of the class. Software (13.4%) was followed by investment banking (11.6%), and consumer products/food/beverage and internet-related services, each with 5.6% of the class.

More than 70% of the first-year class stayed in Northern California during the summer, while 6.9% traveled to the Eastern United States for their mid-program experiences. Other summer positions were scattered across the globe; Asia (6%) and Europe (5.6%) were the most popular international locations.
