It is university policy that all students must be covered by major medical health insurance while attending UC Berkeley. All students are automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and charged a SHIP fee as part of their billable cost.
To assist MFE students, the Haas Financial Aid Office and the MFE Program have negotiated a pro-rated SHIP charge. For the class of 2016, this reduced expenses by about $1,300.
Though some students may be able to waive SHIP, experience shows us that most students in the MFE program do not have the strict equivalent coverage required by the university, especially international students. For a few, SHIP can be successfully waived by submitting the health insurance online waiver form with proof of a comparable health insurance policy. The waiver must be completed each academic year at University Health Services. In order to waive SHIP, you must be enrolled in a private medical health insurance plan that meets ALL of the waiver requirements detailed on the University Health Services (UHS) website.
UHS provides a waiver worksheet (PDF) to help you prepare in advance of using the online waiver tool. You will receive a confirmation number upon completion of the form. Print that page for your records.
Please note that SHIP does not include a spouse or dependents; that coverage must be purchased separately. For more information, please review the University Health Services (UHS) webpage on Dependent Care Options, or email your questions to (email@example.com).
