Logistics and Formalities
Vietnam Visa - open, print and complete (in duplicate) the application form. Submit two copies of the completed form, two recent passport photos (4 cm x 6 cm, affixed to application forms,) your passport plus visa fee (A personal check or money order for $25.00 made out to Embassy of Vietnam) to Sebastian Teunissen.
Assignments
The main assignment for this course will consist of a research paper on a topic to be decided in consultation with the instructor. The topic should encompass some aspect(s) of doing business in Japan and Vietnam. It could compare and contrast an industry in the two countries, it could review market potential for some product or service in each market or follow a similar theme. Ideally, the paper should be related to the particular company or industry in which the student is employed.
The format and length of the paper should be decided in consultation with the instructor. For example, if a Powerpoint presentation might prove more useful to the student than a research document, this would be perfectly acceptable.
Additional assignments are designed to assist the group's understanding of the companies and organizations that we will visit and/or the cultures that we will experience. Each student is to select one of the organizations on our itinerary and prepare a short (5 minute) briefing on that entity. This briefing will be delivered to the group prior to our visit to that particular entity. Following the visit, the same student will lead a de-briefing to summarize what we learned from the visit.
Additionally, each student should select some aspect of history or culture of the two countries we are visiting and be prepared to present a short (5 minute) briefing on this subject. These briefings will be spread throughout the trip to add to our understanding of the countries we will visit. Topics can be selected by the students, but will be assigned if no selection is made.
Evaluation
Evaluation for a grade will be based on three components - the research paper, the briefings and class participation. Participation throughout the classroom sessions and during the study tour will be considered. The breakdown for grading purposes will be as follows:
| Research Paper: |
|
50% |
| Briefings/De-briefings: |
20% |
| Participation: |
30% |
Health and Safety Issues
The Centers for Disease Control makes a number of recommendations regarding health. The following is extracted from their web site pertaining to Vietnam.
See your doctor at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to allow time for shots to take effect. Hepatitis A or immune globulin (IG). Hepatitis B if you might be exposed to blood (for example, health-care workers), have sexual contact with the local population, stay longer than 6 months in the region, or be exposed through medical treatment. Japanese encephalitis, only if you plan to visit rural areas for 4 weeks or more, except under special circumstances, such as a known outbreak of Japanese encephalitis. Rabies, if you might be exposed to wild or domestic animals through your work or recreation. Typhoid vaccination is particularly important because of the presence of S. Typhi strains resistant to multiple antibiotics in this region. As needed, booster doses for tetanus-diphtheria and measles, and a one-time dose of polio for adults.
Note: I have high-lighted the most important points for us, in red. But, please see the CDC site and consult your doctor for your specific needs.
The CD web page applies to all of SE Asia, not specifically Vietnam or Hanoi, therefore not all recommendations may apply to our situation.
Also please see the Vietnam pages of Travel Health On Line.
The US State Department Consular Information Sheets for Japan and Vietnam should also be reviewed.
