Peter E. Haas, BA 40, is one of the most admired Sons of California. The California Alumni Association named him Alumnus of the Year in 1996. This year his alma mater recognizes him as Business Leader of the Year and winner of its Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in business, philanthropy and community service a life-time of leadership that today stands as a model.
Peter Haas went to work at Levi Strauss & Co. in 1945 and together with his father and brother transformed a small successful company into the worlds largest garment manufacturer, and made it an exemplar of corporate citizenship. He served the company as its President, CEO, and is now Chairman of the Executive Committee.
On the campus, his quiet, assured leadership has become a Berkeley legend. As a trustee of the U.C. Berkeley Foundation, he was instrumental in planning and carrying out the successful Campaign for the New Century. With his brother and sister, he made the cornerstone gift that named the School of Business for their father, Walter Haas, Sr., class of 1910. Inspired by their example, more than 2,000 people joined to make the building project a success.
He has been honored with the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award for his philanthropy and service by the United Way of California; Financial World magazine named him CEO of the Year; Time Magazine named him as Leader of Tomorrow. At the Haas School we know him best as friend and valued colleague.
