British author Hugh Johnson wrote in his 2013 Pocket Guide to Wine that Villa Ragazzi is "perhaps the best Sangiovese made in California." This small Napa Valley winery is owned by alumna Michaela Rodeno, MBA 80, and her attorney husband Gregory. "Ragazzi" refers to their kids, now grown. In 1985, they were the first to plant Sangiovese in Napa Valley. The low vigor, low yielding Rodeno clone makes wine that has medium to full body, with good intensity and color; the acidity that makes Sangiovese an archetypal "food wine" also assures cellaring potential. Villa Ragazzi Faraona, a super-Tuscan blend (75% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon) and Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) complete the offer. Total production ranges between 100-200 cases annually. Visitors are welcome by appointment.
