Overview
1. What’s changing about Haas@Cal's login system?
We’ve switched to a different login system, called CalNet, created by UC Berkeley. You may remember CalNet — students have been using it on campus since the late 1990s to check grades and financial aid information, and to change classes.
2. Why are we switching to a new login system?
The new system will make it easier to use Haas@Cal because, once you’ve logged in, you will navigate smoothly between programs and services that will be launched later (even ones hosted by different vendors) without being asked to log in again.
3. Do I have to register in the new login system?
Yes, you need to register in CalNet, as do all current users of Haas@Cal, so that we can verify your identity and protect the security of your account.
4. Can I log in with the Haas@Cal user name I used before this change?
No, your old user name and password won’t be recognized by the new, CalNet system. However, after you register with CalNet, you can create a personalized CalNet ID, using your old user name (or a version of it) as your personalized ID (as long as it meets the CalNet ID requirements, explained below).
5. I was previously assigned a numerical number for my CalNet ID. Can I change it now to my own personalized ID?
Yes, the next time you try to login to Haa@Cal, you will automatically be asked to create your own personalized CalNet ID.
6. Since we are using CalNet to log in, will I have access to Air Bears, the University's wireless network?
No, unfortunately, we can’t offer the wireless service or remote access to library services to Haas@Cal members who are visiting or working on campus. However, if you’re an employee of the University, you will continue to have access.
7. I'm a University employee. Will this change affect my existing CalNet login?
No, you shouldn’t see any changes in your existing CalNet account. Just remember that, if you make any changes to your account, they will affect you when you log in as both an Haas@Cal member and an employee.
8. I'm alreading a member of Haas@Cal. Is my CalNet ID related to the beginning of my Haas@Cal email forwarding account?
No, there’s no relationship between the two. You will continue to use your old Haas@Cal username and password to log into, and manage, your email forwarding account until we launch the new Haas@Cal this summer.
9. If I find an error, what do I do?

Registering in CalNet
1. How do I register in the new login system, CalNet?
Fill out the registration form, and be sure to tell us the information marked with an asterisk (*).
2. Why must I enter my e-mail address twice?
We ask you to enter it twice so that we can make sure you’ve entered the correct address. If there is a difference in the two e-mail addresses you enter, we ask you to enter it again, just to make sure we’ve got it right.
3. Why do I need to enter the first 4 digits of my Social Security Number?
We use the first 4 digits of your Social Security Number, along with the other information you enter on the registration form, to verify that you are a legitimate member of the Haas@Cal community. This prevents unauthorized people from accessing Haas@Cal.
The first four digits of your SSN are not personally identifiable. We don’t have (or need) your whole social security number.
4. What do I do after I’ve filled in the registration form?
Click the Register button at the bottom of the form.
5. What is my CalNet ID?
Your CalNet ID is the user name you type to identify yourself to CalNet — the online doorway to UC Berkeley’s information services.

Creating a passphrase
1. What is a passphrase?
A passphrase is a private password for logging into Haas@Cal. Your passphrase can be a word, a phrase, or an entire sentence, including spaces, as long as it meets the passphrase requirements. Some ideas for passphrases:
• The mailing address of your childhood home or a favorite vacation spot
• A relative’s name and birthday
• A phrase — with punctuation — that’s meaningful to you
2. What are the passphrase requirements?
Here are the requirements for a passphrase:
- It must be 9 to 255 characters, including blank spaces.
- It must contain characters from at least 3 of these groups:
• Uppercase letters (A-Z)
• Lowercase letters (a-z)
• Numbers (0-9)
• Punctuation characters (such as |, $, %, #)
- It must not contain your first, middle, or last names or your CalNet ID.
- Any time you change your passphrase, you should make sure it’s substantially different from the current and previous passphrases.
3. Why must I enter my passphrase twice?
We ask you to enter your passphrase twice so that we can be sure you’ve entered the passphrase you want. If there is a difference in the two passphrases you enter, we ask you to enter it again, just to make sure we’ve got it right.
4. What do I do after I enter my passphrase?
Click the Set Passphrase button. This takes you to a screen where you see your new CalNet ID, have a chance to see your passphrase, and read the Haas@Cal Policies.
5. Do I have to agree to the @Cal policies?
Yes, if you want to use Haas@Cal, you must read and accept the @Cal policies.
6. Should I write down my CalNet ID and passphrase?
A: Yes, it’s a good idea to write them down (in private) and keep them in a secure place, so that you can find them in case you need them.
7. What do I do if I forget my CalNet ID?

Creating a CalNet ID
1. When I create a new CalNet ID during registration, what will be the CalNet ID requirements?
Here are the requirements for a CalNet ID:
- It must be 2 to 30 characters (no spaces).
- It must contain at least 1 letter (a-z, lowercase only).
- It must not contain your Cal student ID or your employee ID (if you work for the university).
- Must not start with “cads.”
- Must not end with a period.
- It can contain only these characters:
• Lowercase letters (a-z)
• Numbers (0-9)
• Periods ( . )
• Underscores ( _ )
• Hyphens ( - )
2. Do I have to agree to the Haas@Cal policies?
Yes, if you want to use Haas@Cal.
