Julia Min Hwang is the Assistant Dean of MBA Career Management Group and Corporate Engagement at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.
Julia Min Hwang, Assistant Dean, CMG & Corporate Engagement
In her role, she oversees the career services for all MBA students and MBA alumni and works with companies and organizations to engage them with Haas. Prior to this role, Julia was the Executive Director of the FTMBA Program Office where she served as the dean of students overseeing the academics and student life. Prior to joining Berkeley Haas, Julia served in many roles at NYU Stern School of Business for ten years including Dean of MBA Admissions and Director of Student Services. She also worked at the Embassy of Japan coordinating the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program and prior to that, taught English in Japan. Julia received her graduate degree in international education from New York University and undergraduate degree in religious studies/Asian studies from the University of Virginia. In her free time, Julia spends with her two young children (ages 4 and 7) exploring San Francisco and the greater bay area.
Michael G. Katz, Director
Michael G. Katz is a respected career coach in the international business school community.
For over six years, Michael has engaged hundreds of Full-Time MBAs, Evening MBAs, Executive MBAs, and alumni in one-on-one and large group formats. Well-regarded among students pursuing careers across a host of industries and functions, he is also known as a subject matter expert on case interviewing for finance. Michael applies this expertise by leading training workshops for students as well as for other career services professionals. Additionally, he has also published a chapter on this topic in the latest edition of "Crack the Case" by David Ohrvall.
Michael currently leads the Career Advising & Programs team for the full-time MBA Program at the Haas School of Business. Previously, he led the MBA Professional Development team at Management Leadership for Tomorrow, having honed his career development skills at NYU Stern and UT McCombs. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the MBA Career Services & Employer Alliance.
Lesah Beckhusen, Career Advisor
Lesah has more than twenty years of deep and broad career counseling experience as an independent career consultant, trainer, product developer and small business owner. Lesah has been at the Haas School for over twelve years as a career advisor and program manager. She has developed and managed many programs including the Career Coaches and Super Saturday Interview Program and most recently the new Haas Virtual Interview Coaching Program. In 1987 Lesah launched SkillScan, a publishing business that develops and markets innovative skills assessment tools to universities and colleges, adult career centers, career counselors and corporations. SkillScan is used by thousands of college and universities throughout the U.S.
Lesah holds an MS degree in Counseling and a BA degree in Psychology from San Diego State University. She is a Certified Toastmaster and travels throughout the U.S. conducting trainings on SkillScan products and is a regular presenter at the International Career Development Conference.
Mark Friedfeld, Career Advisor
With a background in law, marketing and admissions, Mark joined Haas in 2001 after working for the MBA program at the University of Maryland. Following judicial clerkships in Alaska and attorney positions in Washington, D.C., he entered the business world by joining the Princeton Review, where he taught students, trained instructors, designed courses and served in various corporate roles including Special Project Manager and Director of Marketing. As an MBA Career Advisor, Mark works with all students but has a particular focus in financial services.
Away from Haas, Mark is active with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training triathlon program. He received a BS in economics and a BA in international relations from UC Davis and a JD from the American University's Washington College of Law.
Dorothy Zhuomei, Career Advisor
Prior to joining Haas, Dorothy was a consultant at the Boston Consultant Group's San Francisco office. At BCG, she worked on various strategy, operations and organizational development projects in healthcare, consumer goods, technology and non-profits. Dorothy started her professional career in biotechnology after college but soon discovered her passion in coaching and leadership development. Since 2011, She has worked with more than 100+ MBA students, young professionals and entrepreneurs at Kellogg, UCLA Anderson and Hive Global Leaders Program on personal and leadership development. Dorothy graduated from the MMM program (MBA + MEM in Design & Innovation), a dual degree program from the Kellogg School of Management in 2012 and holds a BA in biochemistry from Occidental College. In her spare time, Dorothy loves taking dance lessons and exploring the Bay Area restaurant scene with her husband and friends.
Jonathan Chizick, Technology & Startups
Jonathan has 20 years in hi-growth businesses and Fortune-50 companies across the Technology, Retail, and Manufacturing sectors, including a variety of industries such as consumer electronics, semiconductors, and automotive. His experience encompasses a range of functions, such as Marketing, Brand Management, Business Development, and Operations.In addition to his experience at large technology companies, Jonathan is actively involved in the Silicon Valley startup world, where he is advisor to multiple startups and Venture Capital firms, and a mentor at 500 Startups.Currently, Jonathan is a Marketing and Business Development consultant, advising startup clients on Growth, Marketing, Product Management, and Business Strategy. Jonathan holds an MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Abigail Franklin, Financial Services & Real Estate
Abby Franklin worked for twelve years in investment banking in both New York and San Francisco. She spent most of her career at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs focusing on tax-exempt bonds, mergers and acquisitions, and derivative products in the healthcare industry. She received her AB from Princeton University (Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs) and her MPP from Harvard University (John F. Kennedy School of Government). She currently serves on the Board of Library Trustees for the Berkeley Public Library and the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee for Prospect Sierra School. She is looking forward to working with the students at Haas.
Anita Kishore, Healthcare
Anita recently joined the Clinton Health Access Initiative after interning with Medicines Sans Frontieres in the Access Campaign. Anita spent the past eight years in the pharmaceutical and management consulting industries, most recently as a Senior Director of Strategy & Innovation in Pfizer in New York City. She has also worked for Bain & Company and Sandoz, both in the US and Munich. Anita began her career as a scientist and has written and spoken on the transition from science to consulting. She completed her degrees in chemistry earning a Bachelor’s from Yale University, a Master’s from the University of Melbourne (with Honors), and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. In her free time Anita enjoys running, singing, cooking, and serving as a board member with the Global Freedom Center.
Wendy Pratt, CPG & Marketing
Wendy Pratt has over 12 years of experience successfully building brands and launching new products for both large global businesses and smaller companies in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) world. After graduation from Claremont McKenna College (BA in Economics), Wendy began her career in management consulting with Deloitte. There she helped lead clients through difficult transition periods with significant improvements in growth, profitability and efficiency. Wendy also designed and led a training program for 16 new Business Analysts at Deloitte. Subsequently, Wendy completed her Masters of Business Administration in Marketing/Strategy from The Anderson School at UCLA. Then, she transitioned to brand management gaining experience as a summer intern at Procter & Gamble and working for Nestlé USA for over six years. She managed the largest brand in the Petcare Division, worked in New Ventures for the Beverage Division and worked on the integration of Nestlé and Purina Petcare. While at Nestlé, she held multiple leadership positions and was honored with the CEO's "2001 Very Best Marketing Award." She also led a company-wide task force to improve the marketing organization and presented recommendations to the CEO. After Nestlé, Wendy worked for Roll Global for six years launching new products and managing businesses in the Paramount Farms Division. Specifically, she led the introduction of two new snack lines, developed two consumer websites and launched the company’s first B2B website.
David Riemer, Startups & Storytelling
David is a former ad agency President and Internet marketing executive who now works with entrepreneurs, artists and students to focus their ideas. In short, he helps them get their story straight. He created Box Out Industries to work with entrepreneurs and Spiral Staircase to collaborate with artists. David is also a guest lecturer and mentor at the Berkeley-Haas Business School where he serves as Executive-in-Residence. David is a regular speaker on innovation and entrepreneurship throughout the Bay Area and internationally as well. With Box Out, David advises emerging Internet and consumer technology companies. He specializes in helping new companies clarify their business and product strategy through a fanatical focus on the customer. With his production company, Spiral Staircase, David produces theatrical projects. He is currently producing an original musical by Bruce Hornsby called SCKBSTD. David started his career as an Assistant Account Executive at JWT New York and eventually became President of JWT West. In 1998, he left advertising and brought his strategic and marketing leadership to two Internet start-ups – Quokka Sports and the FeedRoom. He later joined Yahoo! in 2002 as VP marketing. In various roles at Yahoo!, David led business-to-business and consumer marketing efforts across virtually all of Yahoo!’s products serving 500 million users globally. David holds an MBA from Columbia and BA from Brown University. He serves on the Board of the American Conservatory Theater and the Destiny Arts Center.
Working Professionals and MBA Alumni
Pat DeMasters, Director
Pat DeMasters joined the Haas School of Business in 2006 as Director of Career Management for the Evening & Weekend MBA Program, the Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA Program and MBA alumni. Prior to Haas, she was the senior director for the North Bay practice of Spherion Human Capital Consulting where she focused on coaching and/or advising senior- and mid-level clients from financial services, biotech, consumer products and technology industries. She has 15 years experience in Human Capital Consulting which includes career transition/outplacement, career development, training, & program development serving clients in the Bay Area, US and abroad.
Pat has a Masters degree in Career Development from JFK University and an undergraduate degree in Organization Behavior from the University of San Francisco. Throughout her career, Pat has been very involved with organizations such as the Association of Career Professionals International (ACPI), Financial Women's Association (FWA) and multiple human resources groups where she held office or participated on committees.
Lara Klein, Career Advisor
Lara Klein is committed to supporting the EWMBA students and all Haas alumni in making their next career move, whether it’s advancing to a higher level role or making a career transition. Prior to joining Haas, Lara spent the past five years coaching the working professional MBA populations at NYU Stern School of Business, helping students and alumni to advance their careers and make transitions in a variety of industries and functions including consulting, finance, marketing, media, entertainment, technology, and healthcare/pharma. Lara spent the first 15+ years of her career in recruiting, career development, and other HR roles across a range industries, including companies such as Sony, International Creative Management, and Sanyo North America (now Panasonic). She has a B.A. in Psychology from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA from San Diego State University. She is a graduate of Accomplishment Coaching, an accredited coaching program in New York.
Luke Kreinberg, Career Advisor
Luke Kreinberg primarily serves Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA students and alumni, specializing in helping students to move forward in their careers. He helps them gain clarity about objectives as well as identify the competencies they need to flourish in their professional lives. Some of the companies he's coached at include: Bain & Company, McKinsey & Company, and Yahoo. Luke graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Davis with a BA in international relations. He received his Coaching Certification from New Ventures West in San Francisco. In his former life, Luke served as a partner in a boutique search firm and developed learning curricula for emerging technology firms. He is the author of The Book of Goals: Achievements, Plans, and Dreams of a Lifetime which has sold 100,000+ copies. Luke swims and gardens, but not at the same time.
Jeanne Lew, Career Advisor
Jeanne has 15+ years in marketing and management consulting successfully introducing products and programs across the financial services, technology and consumer packaged goods sectors. Her professional career began in strategic, systems and litigation consulting with Price Waterhouse Management Consulting Services. Currently, she is a marketing and strategy consultant advising clients in strategic marketing and branding, and product development and implementation initiatives. Her educational background includes an MBA in Marketing from UCLA's Anderson School.
Christine Blaine, Operations Manager
Born and raised in the Boston area, Christine has been a resident of Berkeley for the past 20 years. Before joining Haas, Christine worked in the retail, banking and specialty food industries with positions in sales, marketing, production and operations. She graduated from California State University in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. Christine manages and supports our Full-Time MBA programs.
Alexandra Daily, Program Coordinator
Alexandra supports the Career Management Group by connecting students to the resources that the CMG offers and assisting the Full Time MBA program. Prior to working at Haas, Alexandra facilitated client relations at the East Bay SPCA, and supported students and operations teams in numerous positions on the Berkeley campus, most recently with Cal Performances. A graduate of UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, Alexandra is excited to return to Cal. You can find her at the front desk of S420 or setting up workshops around campus.
Gagan Kular, Project Manager
Gagan has transitioned into the Project Manager role from her previous role working as the Program Coordinator. She is a good contact for any students or alumni with questions about CareerNet, workshops, and CMG services. Gagan is a proud UC Berkeley alumna with a degree in Integrative Biology. Prior work experience at Cal includes the LEAD Center as an Office Management Intern for 4 full years, volunteering through the Tang Center as a Health Worker, and she also interned at the Public Health & Development Arthritis Foundation of San Francisco. She is an alumnae member of Gamma Phi Beta and in her spare time you might see her hiking all around the Bay Area, venturing out to different coffee/tea shops, and exploring the street festivals.
Jojo Lam, Assistant Director, Technology & Communications
Jojo Lam is a UC Berkeley alumna with a degree in Political Science. Her first job out of college was traveling as a Leadership Consultant for the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She remains an active alumna and currently advises on member retention and development. Prior to Haas, Jojo was a technology recruiter working with companies in the Bay Area. She transitioned to career management to focus on career development and pursue a career in higher education. Today, Jojo is the point person for career management technology systems and communications.
Aileen Bautista, Program Coordinator
Aileen comes to us from her previous role working in the MBA Admissions Office for Working Professionals here at Berkeley-Haas. Prior to joining us at Haas, Aileen worked at the UC Davis Career Recruiting Center. She is a graduate of UC Davis with a degree in Communication and a minor in Sociology. While in college, she interned at Appency, a PR and Marketing firm for mobile apps, and KCRA-TV in Sacramento. Aileen was born and raised in the Bay Area. Outside of work, Aileen enjoys travelling, working on DIY projects, and trying out new restaurants.
