Alumni Flock to Special Interest Groups E-mail Lists and Events

Last summer, Sarita Jain, MBA 02, Mark Barrett, MBA 02, Greg Overholtzer, MBA 81, and several other alums in the biotech industry started a new HAN-Biotech Special Interest group (SIG), to provide a forum for Haas alumni interested in biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, and medical devices. This is just one of many thriving Haas special interest groups (see box).

"Haas alums are building successful careers throughout the biotech and medtech industries in marketing, business development, and operational roles," says Leah Fine, MBA 01. "This dynamic group always has words of wisdom to offer and share and will often provide a fresh perspective or new idea to my work-related questions and challenges."

In addition to the e-mail list, the group hosts activities to keep up with the new developments and trends in these industries, to network with business professionals in a broad range of functions, and to identify and pursue new career opportunities. Their monthly gatherings are a great way to learn about the Bay Area biotech industry over a drink after work.

"One of the primary reasons to attend business school is to make contacts," says Peng Leong, MBA 04, of Chiron, currently enrolled in the Evening & Weekend Program, "The Bay Area is a center for biotechnology. Haas is optimally located to educate the next generation of business professionals in this growing industry."
