Letter from the Dean
Dear Haas School Alumni and Friends:
I am introducing a regular letter in CalBusiness magazine to briefly update you on the major issues that my colleagues and I are working on. This first letter will give you a sense of our quickening momentum.
Faculty Hiring: Our first priority is to enhance our already world-class faculty. We are actively recruiting 11 faculty members for this hiring season, representing unprecedented growth in the size of the Haas faculty. In a difficult budget year for many other business schools and universities, Haas has the financial capacity to fund ten of the new positions itself; one will be funded by the university. The new faculty members will enable us to offer more and a greater variety of courses, as well as add to the schoolís production of new knowledge and ideas.
Campaign and Strategy Working Group: In November, we held the first meeting of the new Campaign and Strategy Working Group, which is composed of faculty and receives input from alumni, students, and staff. The groupís goals are to continue refining the schoolís capital campaign priorities, refresh the schoolís strategic plan, and make sure the two are in alignment. I have set May 1 as a deadline for the Haas faculty to vote on our new plan. For more details on the capital campaign and its priorities, please see the insert in the middle of this magazine.
Facility Issues: We have just completed a major architectural and space review of our current building complex. We expect to soon announce a master plan for major renovations and improvements in 2009 and 2010.
I am delighted and honored to be here as your dean. I have a fierce passion for our extraordinary institution and look forward to engaging your support.
