More Praise for Information Rules
Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy,
the best-selling new book by Haas professors
Hal Varian and Carl Shapiro,
has been reviewed in many publications, including
The New York Times Magazine, The Economist,
and most recently, Fortune magazine.
Appearing in the February 5th edition, the
Fortune magazine review
touts the book's solid application of economic principles in
unraveling the new information-based economy.
Also noted in the article is Varian's post as dean of UC Berkeley's
School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS), the first school
of its kind in the country.
Writing in
The New York Times Magazine
on December 6,
Paul Krugman notes that Information Rules is apparently
outselling New Rules for the New Economy,
the new book by Wired executive editor Kevin Kelly.
"Why is Kelly being outsold by a couple of economics professors?"
asks Krugman rhetorically.
Perhaps, he suggests, it is because Kelly "offers us a sort
of New Age meets Horatio Alger vision," whereas "Shapiro
and Varian are hardheaded, even Machiavellian.
To make money from information, they suggest,
you have to find clever, in some cases dastardly,
ways to outmaneuver your competition and exploit your customers."
The Economist's
review, published in the December 12 issue,
also compares Information Rules favorably to Kelly's book.
"As a practical guide for doing business in the network economy
[Kelly's book] is more mystifying than helpful,"
says The Economist, whereas Shapiro and Varian
"bring a discipline to their analysis that is
usually quite absent from the overheated burblings
of the cyberprophets.... If you want to understand
how the network economy really functions and why some
companies succeed spectacularly and others, despite having
mould-breaking technology, come a cropper, look no further.
The fact that it is also written in restrained,
jargon-free English is an added bonus."
