Web site hosting and URL policy

Web site hosting
The Haas School of Business provides web server space and web support for departments, programs, courses, and student groups within Haas or sponsored by Haas and provides server space for individual pages for Haas faculty, staff, and students. Support is limited; review the Service Level Agreements for more information.

Anyone who establishes a web site that is hosted on a Haas School of Business web server is responsible for maintaining the site. It is the responsibility of the individual who establishes the site to notify the Haas web group or Haas Computing Services when the site is no longer needed. Any site that is not maintained or kept up to date is subject to removal from the server.

Naming sites
All sites hosted by the Haas School of Business will contain haas.berkeley.edu in their URL. Generally, Haas groups and programs will be assigned URLs in this pattern: [server name or alias]/[site name]/[subsite name]. Some examples:
haas.Berkeley.edu/bpp
www.haas.berkeley.edu/groups/careercenter
groups.haas.Berkeley.edu/hcs
faculty.haas.Berkeley.edu/aaker
courses.haas.Berkeley.edu/Spring2000/ba126
Haas URLs must conform to school naming conventions and standards. Unique URLs must be approved by the Haas webteam; corporate names are not appropriate in Haas School URLs.

Special-request URLs
On occasion, departments and programs within Haas request a special URL. Generally, a shorter-than-usual URL is wanted to make promoting an event easier. The following policy has been adopted by the Haas web team:

haas.berkeley.edu/[sitename] URLs in this format may be permitted by the Haas web group, generally only for short-term projects. Requests for URLs in this format must be made to the Haas web group. These URLs are appropriate only for sites hosted on the Unix webserver "haas."

[site name].haas.berkeley.edu Requests for new URLs in this format require establishment of an alias (e.g. sitename) for the supporting web server and must go through campus Information Systems and Technology (IS&T). Requests must be made to the Haas web group; permission will be granted on a case-by-case basis based on the criteria below.

[sitename].berkeley.edu The Haas School of Business does not normally host web sites that are not haas.Berkeley.edu. URLs in this format are not appropriate for Haas-specific programs, but will be considered for programs jointly sponsored by the Haas School and other schools at Berkeley. These requests must go through campus Information Systems and Technology (IS&T). Requests must be made to the Haas web group; permission will be granted on a case-by-case basis based on the criteria below.

[sitename].edu The University of California does not host web sites that are not berkeley.edu. Groups and departments requiring a URL in this format must purchase the services of an independent ISP (Internet Service Provider). The ISP can provide a [sitename].com URL, but may not be able to provide site names in the .edu domain. The Haas School of Business will permit links to these URLs only when a special need is identified. Requests must be made to the Haas web group; permission will be granted on a case-by-case basis based on the criteria below.

URL exception policy criteria
Each request for a nonstandard URL will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Final determination will be made by the Marketing and Communications and Haas Computing Services. In general, nonstandard URLs will be permitted where:

All sites with standard and nonstandard URLs must be clearly identified as a Haas School site and have a prominent link to the Haas School.

The UC Berkeley Information Systems and Technology website has more information about domain names at UC Berkeley. If you have questions about this policy, contact the Haas web team.
