Working Virtually

Virtual work refers to work in which you use technology to support or make possible:

  • interactions with others involved in the accomplishment of work-related tasks.
  • collaboration to achieve organizational goals and objectives regardless of where you or your co-workers are located: organizationally, geographically or temporally dispersed.

Initially thought as work not performed in the office and limited to employees working from home or from dispersed locations, these early understandings of virtual work reflect only part of a broader phenomenon. Given the ubiquity of technology, most of us are working virtually most of the time and, to a greater extent, integrating work across life dimensions.
