Come back and visit your School - ranked #2 in CSR in the US by The Wall Street Journal in 2006 & 2007 and #1 in the world in 2008 by the Financial Times!
Strategic decision-making in business must now take into account a wide range of criteria relating to the financial, environmental, and social implications of business operations. Research is mounting proving that a visible commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) has clear implications for the corporate bottom line, particularly in the area of branding and talent management. Employees across business functions continue to struggle with the fundamental challenge of embedding CSR into their day-to-day business operations and management.
This one-day workshop will introduce Haas Alumni to the emergent and complex field of corporate social responsibility as a business strategy – a corporate strategy that is integrated with core business objectives and core competencies to create positive social change and business value. The session will explore the different ways in which all companies and functions can incorporate societal and environmental perspectives into strategic thinking, as well as the challenges and dilemmas involved in this process.

Workshop Overview
The goal of the workshop is that participants will emerge ready to develop and implement strategic CSR within their own companies and industries through any job function. Participants will be asked to come prepared with specific issues, successful examples, and key concerns from their organizational context to debate during the workshop.
Participants will be exposed to the theories, frameworks, global trends and current cases of CSR. The workshop will investigate "good practices" of companies who have implemented socially responsible strategies while maintaining or maximizing financial returns. Participants will be asked to develop their own repertoire of tools and implementation strategies that can be utilized across industries and sectors to set up CSR strategies that yield both financial and social profit. They will gain both a broad understanding of the issues within external and internal corporate responsibility, and vertical knowledge on industries of their selection.
This workshop is designed to focus on strategic CSR issues, namely corporate strategy, stakeholder engagement, branding and communication, metrics and measurement, and socially responsible investing. Through an in-depth exploration and discussion of these issues participants will learn:
- Models to understand how organizations simultaneously can create economic and societal value while managing complex stakeholder relationships
- Analytical capacity to identify new risks and opportunities and respond accordingly
- Strategies to gain competitive advantage through responsible and sustainable practices
- Ability to translate CSR philosophy and rhetoric into smart practices
- CSR practices and leadership skills as internal change agents
The session will be led by Kellie McElhaney, Adjunct Professor at Haas & Executive Director of the Center for Responsible Business, and will feature Haas Faculty and guest alumni speakers (to be announced).
Who Should Attend
The program is open to Haas Alumni and their guests. Participants who are interested in developing and implementing strategic CSR within their own companies, functions, and industries, or who may be interested in making a career transition into a CSR role should attend.
