First scholarship of its kind to honor Paul Newman

Berkeley CA - The Center for Responsible Business is launching a new scholarship for the 2009-10 school year for an incoming Haas School of Business undergraduate with a commitment to corporate responsibility (CSR).

The Give Something Back CSR Scholarship, funded by the West Coast's largest independent office supplier, Give Something Back Business Products, Inc., was established in honor of Paul Newman, actor and Newman’s Own founder, to recognize his commitment to business’s role in creating positive change in the world.

The scholarship is the first scholarship of its kind offered to a Haas undergraduate and will provide $5,000 per year of funding for two years. The recipient will be a need-based candidate who is passionate about and exhibits a strong interest in corporate responsibility, comes from an underserved geographical location, and demonstrates outstanding leadership potential.

"We are very proud to partner with the Center for Responsible Business to honor Mr. Newman, a pioneering social entrepreneur who proved it's possible for a for-profit company to do extremely well by doing good,” said Sean Marx, CEO of Give Something Back. “Just as important, we're excited to help a student work toward the goal of using business to effect positive change."

Newman inspired the founding of Give Something Back in 1991, which is based on Newman’s Own model of giving back to the community. He was also a founding funder for the Haas School’s Center for Responsible Business, helping to launch the John C. Whitehead Faculty Fellowship in Corporate Responsibility.

Said Nell Newman, co-founder and president of Newman’s Own Organics, “Dad would be pleased that Give Something Back, a company he inspired, and Haas School of Business’s Center for Responsible Business, a graduate school he admired, have honored him with this scholarship that will help students expand their education in corporate responsibility.”

Applications from incoming Haas undergraduates will be accepted in July and will be reviewed by a committee comprised of Center, Haas, and Give Something Back representatives. The scholarship recipient will be notified by early August and will be required to take CSR-related courses as well as maintain a minimum GPA while at Haas.

“This unique undergraduate scholarship allows us to send a message to the next generation of business leaders about the power of business to create positive social change,” said Jo Mackness, executive director at the Center.
