HSRIF Timeline, Selection Criteria & Application Guidelines
STUDENT PARTICIPATION TIMELINE
Fall Semester (1st year): MBAs
- Apply with the CRB to participate in HSRIF (Mid-October).
- Applicants may be asked to interview with current MBA Principals and Center staff.
- We expect to bring on 6 new MBA’s and 2 MFE’s each cycle
- November: Familiarize yourself with the internal operations of the Fund by attending Fund Principals meetings (selected participants only)
Spring semester (1st year) (selected participants only)
- Recruiting in March for new class of MFEs
MBAs:
- Assist current Fund Principals in developing company pitches
- Familiarize yourself with the field of SRI and formulate an investing thesis to test
- Begin pitching investment ideas (~2 per semester)
- Help with administrative duties
- Expected time commitment: ~6 hours/week
- Attend weekly Fund Principals meeting.
- ~3 hours/week of company/market research outside of the meeting
Summer 2009 (selected participants only)
- Monitor the Fund’s investments with the limited guidance of outgoing Fund Principals
- MFE students will monitor the fund more actively
- NOTE: Lloyd Kurtz (SRI Portfolio Manager at Nelson Capital Management and Haas professor) also will advise/oversee the Fund during the summer, since students may have limited ability to manage the fund depending on the nature and location of their summer internship
- Prepare an investment pitch to present immediately on return to campus in the Fall
- Expected time commitment: ~3 hours/week
Fall semester (2nd year) (selected participants only)
- Take 1 unit Social Investing class with Lloyd Kurtz – tentatively scheduled for 2 consecutive Sundays in September (mandatory)
- Pitch investment ideas (~2 per semester)
- Continue with administrative duties
- October: Interview and select new managers from incoming class, who will begin in the Spring.
- Expected time commitment: ~6 hours/week (excluding Social Investing class)
- Attend weekly Fund Principals meeting.
- ~3 hours of company/market research outside of the meeting
Spring semester (2nd year): (selected participants only)
- Lead management of the Fund with the assistance of new 1st year participants
- Pitch investment ideas (~2 per semester)
- Continue with administrative duties
- April/May: Write Fund annual report, transition management responsibility to new 1st year participants.
- Expected time commitment: ~6 hours/week
- Attend weekly Fund Principals meeting.
- ~3 hours of company/market research outside of the meeting
CREDITS RECEIVED
- Participation in the HSRIF earns 6 units of course credit (2 credits per semester, Spring 1st year, Fall 2nd year, and Spring 2nd year) via an Independent Study
- Since selected participants are automatically enrolled in this course, your bid points each semester will decrease by ~150 points (out o the total 1000 points

SELECTION CRITERIA
The application will consist of a personal written statement and resume followed by an invitation only interview process. The Center encourages both male and female students with diverse backgrounds to apply, including those with technical, financial, and legal experience, and with a strong commitment to CSR.
Primary selection criteria may include:
- Desirable past work experiences and/or valuable areas of personal expertise, such as finance experience, legal training, marketing experience, and CSR-focused experienced.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people inside and outside the University.
- Articulation of a strong interest in the Fund and its objectives.
- Diverse experiences and a high level of personal achievement.
- Desire and ability to meet the HSRIF's high time and energy demands on a weekly basis.
- The absence of conflicting constraints, possibly such as study abroad programs.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES
MBA Applications Due: 12:00pm PST, Monday, October 12, 2009
MFE Applications Due: March/April 2010, exact date TBD
To apply to become a principal with the HSRI Fund, candidates should submit (1) a resume and (2) a personal statement that addresses at least the following questions:
- What do you bring to HSRI and what do you hope to get out of your experience?
- What is your intended post-MBA or MFE career plan and how will your HSRI experience impact your future career?
- Why do you believe CSR is an important screen for investment decisions?
- What related background and expertise do you have that was not highlighted on your resume?
- What other time commitments you have, including other programs or activities that will be pursued during the year?
Application materials should be emailed to respbus@haas.berkeley.edu with the subject line: "HSRIF Application" and must be received by 12:00 PM (PST) on Monday, October 12th, 2009.
Finalists may be invited to interview with current student Principals and Center staff. Notification of acceptance into the program will be sent to successful applicants by Friday, October 23, 2009.
