Center Hosts Social Performance Metrics Conference

On April 8-9, the Center for Responsible Business hosted the "Measuring and Reporting Social, Environmental, and Financial Performance" conference, an annual CSR event held in partnership with Boston University's School of Management, London Business School, and The Aspen Institute's Business and Society Program.


The conference featured keynote speeches from John Elkington, co-founder and chairman of SustainAbility, and Gavin Power, Senior Advisor at the United Nation's Global Compact (UNGC).


Thirteen different academic papers were also presented - all around powerful themes, such as: the U curve relationship between CSR and brand attributes (Hill); a high degree of insider ownership of a firm predicting lower CSR spending (Rubin); the virtuous cycle between CSR and a firm's financial performance (Peloza)...

Since we launched the Center for Responsible Business in January 2003, we have been so busy building our curriculum, developing research agendas, running our unique experiential learning CSR projects inside of companies, hiring staff, teaching students - that we have ignored a core tenet of good strategic corporate responsibility: communication and transparency. The Center for Responsible Business is pleased to announce the recipients of the first Gap Inc. Fellowship in Corporate Social Responsibility for the Haas School of Business' incoming MBA class of 2007.

By successfully balancing innovation, quality, and ethical sourcing in a real-world case for the apparel industry, a team of undergraduate Haas students took top honors at the first Haas undergraduate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Case Competition, held on April 13.
